A warm white or a soft greige suits most kitchens, often with one deeper color on the island. These are popular choices for refinished cabinets.
Start with the countertop and the floor, because those are not changing. A white that looks clean on a chip can turn gray beside cool marble or yellow beside oak, so we hold sample boards against your actual counters and look at them in morning light and under the pendants before anyone commits.

Finish worn through at the pulls
Look around the knobs and the drawer under the sink. Bare wood or a dull patch means the finish is no longer sealing the door.
A tacky film near the range
Grease that comes back right after cleaning has worked into the old finish. It is also the number one reason paint fails to stick.
Chipping from an earlier paint job
Peeling paint on cabinets usually means the doors were never degreased or bond-primed. It has to come off before anything new goes on.
Orange oak or a dated color
Boxes that are solid and square but stuck in an old color are the ideal refinish. Oak grain can even be filled for a smooth modern look.
