Cabinet colors worth committing to
Painted cabinets stay put for a decade, so most homeowners choose a warm white or a soft greige and save one deeper color for the island. These are the finishes we are spraying most in metro Atlanta.
Start with the countertop and the floor, because they are staying. A white that reads clean on a chip can go gray next to cool quartz or yellow next to oak. We put sample boards right on your counters and check them in daylight and under the pendants before you choose.
If you are torn, keep the perimeter light and put the bold color on the island. A near-black like Iron Ore with brass pulls gives the kitchen weight without making the room feel smaller. The boxes are solid and square
Open every door. If the shelves are flat, the corners are tight, and nothing is swelling under the sink, the boxes have years left.
You like the layout
If the storage works and nothing needs to move, new cabinets would only buy you the same footprint in a different color.
The doors are sound
Solid wood, MDF, and thermofoil in good condition all take a bonding primer and enamel well.
The color is the problem
Orange oak, dated cherry, or a builder white gone yellow is a finish issue, not a cabinet issue. Paint fixes it.
The finish is worn at the pulls
Dull or bare patches around the knobs mean the old finish is spent. The door underneath is usually fine.
